Brackley Station under construction
This is a scene captured during the construction of Brackley Station in 1897. Despite being built to the familiar island platform design, this particular Last Main Line station was unique. Here, not only was the platform reached by a footbridge that spanned the down line, instead of the more common layout of a staircase leading down from the centre of the station bridge, but the booking hall was built on an embankment overlooking the line, rather than on the platform itself. Note the piles of hardcore that have been placed at intervals beside the platform edge: presumably these would be used for the permanent way trackbed. See on Route Map
