Girder bridge construction
This photograph of girder bridge construction on the Last Main Line was taken at an unidentified location in March 1897. Visible beyond the girders and brick abutments are the stanchions and parapet of the temporary wooden bridge that was erected for use whilst the permanent structure was being completed. A line of contractor's railway, flanked by a mass of debris and materials, runs along the floor of the dressed cutting. Another section of temporary track, seen here bearing a Midland Railway mineral wagon, has been laid along the top of the far cutting wall.
