Interior of a navvy hut near Calvert, Buckinghamshire
Thought to have been photographed on 07.06.1897, this is the interior of a foreman's navvy hut near Calvert. Despite its primitive appearance, this timber accommodation erected by the contractor was decidedly comfortable when compared with the crude dwellings that navvies had endured for much of the nineteenth century. As the pram standing by the table demonstrates, navvies working on the Last Main Line often had their families living with them.
