Woodhead Station, Cheshire

Photographed by Newton in May 1903, this rather atmospheric and picturesque location is the site of the Great Central Railway's station at Woodhead, Cheshire. A proud railwayman stands impassively on the platform, as the west portals of the Woodhead tunnel disappear into the Pennine rock beyond. In 1912, a three year project was begun to increase the width of one of the tunnel's vertical shafts, a £12,000 scheme intended to improve the tunnel's inadequate ventilation. See on Route Map
