North section of Swithland viaduct, Leicestershire
These brick arches form the north section of the viaduct built to carry the Last Main Line across Swithland Reservoir. This huge expanse of water had to be drained prior to the viaduct's construction, and in his quest to achieve the ideal picture, Newton was able to stand on the reservoir bed. Henry Lovatt & Co. of Wolverhampton was the firm contracted to build this section of the Railway (Contract No.2, Leake to Aylestone). See on Route Map
