Bridge 434 near Shawell in Leicestershire.
Looking north towards the three-arched Bridge 434, or Coles Bridge, located immediately to the west of Shawell. The purpose of the three arches was to provide allowance for the railway to be quadrupled at a future date if required. If this had happened, the bridge would have been underpinned and the cutting widened, allowing an extra set of tracks to run beneath each of the side arches. This shot taken in June 1977 shows a surprisingly clear trackbed, but the cutting sides have a fairly substantial covering of undergrowth. The bridge itself is apparently in good shape, although there are several plants growing from the parapet base. See on Route Map
