Four children posing with their dog at Newton Purcell, Oxfordshire

Four children and their dog, photographed outside a hut at Newton Purcell Camp, Oxfordshire, circa 1897. Navvy accommodation had improved tremendously by the time the London Extension was built. Unlike the primitive dwellings inhabited by navvies during the mid-nineteenth century, workers in the 1890s lived with their families in hutted camps erected by the contractors. See on Route Map
