Metropolitan Railway's poster: Rambles in Metro-Land
A delightful poster entitled Rambles in Metro-Land, published by the Metropolitan Railway around 1929. Metro-Land was the name given by the company to the leafy suburban corridor served by their trains which led out from north-west London into Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. In a quite remarkable venture, the Metropolitan's pragmatic attempt to 'create' a society of passengers along its route even led to the company building nine housing estates in its Metro-Land area. It was posters such as this one that were employed to promote its virtues: here it is seen as a convenient rural retreat where passengers leaving the station at Great Missenden or Amersham can quickly escape into the sights and sounds of village life.
