North portal of Weekday Cross tunnel, Nottingham

Photographed around 1897, these are a number of Midland Railway mineral wagons stationed by the north portal of Weekday Cross tunnel, Nottingham. The chairs affixed to the good quality sleepers indicate the track on the left to be the main line permanent way. By comparison, the mud covered tracks on the right are the hastily laid temporary contractor's rails. Logan & Hemingway was the firm responsible for building this section of the Line (Contract No.1, Annesley to Leake). See on Route Map
